a velvet persuasion

visiting lil sis this weekend was eye-opening!  who knew her little 2-bedroom townhouse held the masses of treasures that it did to fill a significant portion of the new home!!!

we had a combined Happy Birthday Chris party with a housewarming on Saturday night - and with my mom and aunt unpacking and arranging all week, together with Bernie and Deb's handiness around the house - it looked amazing!

even though they have some great amazing furniture  - jeff and cover are still searching for a few key pieces to fit in with their new decor.  I am trying to convince Cover to get a tufted velvet chaise or settee for the sitting space in their bedroom, or for a sitting area in their massive office.  As much as I'm a huge fan of greige - some color is needed...

the original inspiration, from Lauren Liess of Pure Style Home:

here are some other inspirations:

my good friend Allison's house

oh my I love this one and was extremely sad to find that the $495 pricetag was for a rental... at Bridge Furniture and Props

I'll be on the search for some pillows for myself in the meantime...

Duh part deux

A while ago I did a post about Duh, my favorite home decor store, that happens to be in Pensacola.  {see it here.}  Another trip to the store, so I have some more inspirations for you!

Once again - disclaimer that these photos were taken with an iPhone camera!!! very blurry. But I still love looking at them!

I love all the taxidermy!  ... it is a fine line though... I have recently raided our hunting camp for some deer antlers that are now proudly displayed on my bookshelf.  That is about as close as I can justify getting to taxidermy on Windsor.

Catalog?!

As you know - coined by my new blog friend and long-lost cousin, Flo, I am a "gray lady."  I do love all things gray and any permutation of the color.

So what is this new catalog that has hit my mailbox??

First of all, the cover instantly has me drooling, with a little reminiscence of my beautiful mother on her honeymoon with an equally amazing donkey:

doesn't my dad look so young and tan??!??

I think I may have to buy something from Serena & Lily just to say I have.

more pillows?

new fabric??

that office chair?

updates are in our future.  of course.

a table refinished... a first!

Done awhile ago, just now posting!  I needed a better side table for the guest room and wanted to experiment with refinishing and antiquing.

Inspiration tables:

from Richard Tubbs

above...
from Interiors and Antiques in Vestavia Hills
and below....

The find:

The process (compiled from several you-tube videos):

Sand down the table, paint with a base coat (I chose Ben Moore's Coastal Fog, 976)

Put a coat of lighter-colored paint on top after base is dry (Waverly Snow White and Cottage Linen), and wipe off in line with the woodgrain with a rag.  You will be removing lots of the paint, and can do this many times.

Water down your lighter paint and continue to use the above technique to apply depth and the illusion of woodmarkings to your surface.

Sand down the edges in a subtle way to make it look less "new".

The end result:

Did that make sense at all??  I'm not the best explainer.  Maybe you should just you-tube it like I did...

Thankfully - we were able to rig the deck without major work done, and we added a beautiful doggie-door that Piper just loves running through!!
